In The Netherlands we have a tradition of eating “oliebollen” on New Year’s Eve. A
funny thing to mention is that in The Netherlands we call it “Old Year’s Evening". Oliebollen are a Dutch specialty and there is actually no English word to translate this. It is a sort of donut in the shape of a sphere, filled with raisins and fried in hot oil. They are sold is stalls that you also see on fairgrounds, which are called "oliebollenkraam". In December you see them everywhere in the streets and around shopping malls in The Netherlands. To give you an idea this a photo:
There is a Dutch newpaper who runs a test every year to find the best oliebol. There is a guy called Richard Visser with a stall in Rotterdam and he is the best of all. He won the test last year and also already 8 times before, but this year he finished in the 3rd place. So a lot of people from Rotterdam and all over the Netherlands come to buy his oliebollen for New Year's Eve. There is always a long line of people waiting, which can last up to 2 hours! In the next photo you can see the waiting line; all the other photos are people who finally succeeded in buying oliebollen.
